DHL Goes Green in Canada's First LEED Certified Facility

- DHL Express is recognized for its environmentally-conscious building and energy-saving reductions - LEED facility supports DHL's GoGreen environmental protection initiative

BRAMPTON, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Sept. 29, 2015) - DHL, the world's leading logistics company, today announced that its DHL Express Headquarters, located in Brampton, Ontario, has earned its first LEED certification status. The facility, opened in 2012, earned its LEED designation because of its environmentally responsible programs, systems and innovation throughout the building. All elements were designed to conserve energy and water, reduce costs and greenhouse gas emissions, and contribute to a healthier environment for residents, employees and the Brampton community. The certification supports DHL's GoGreen environmental protection program, which includes a quantified target to improve its carbon efficiency by 2020.

Brampton's first LEED certified facility offers numerous environmentally economical features that helped qualify the building including:

  • Water use reduction strategies included more efficient bathrooms and fixtures which resulted in a usage reduction of 46 percent;
  • 1 million liters of drinking water saved;
  • Energy management strategies result in a reduction of energy use by 38 percent;
  • 80 tons of construction waste generated from the project was recycled and diverted from landfills;
  • Energy star rated equipment was installed throughout the facility; and
  • More than half of the regionally purchased furniture for the building was manufactured locally, supporting local businesses in the region.

As part of its GoGreen strategy, DHL has a variety of programs in place to support energy conservation and use facilities more efficiently. Other GoGreen initiatives focus on optimizing the fuel efficiency of the company's aircraft and vehicles as well as continuing research on alternative fuels. Last month, DHL Express began rolling out an all "green" fleet of commercial delivery vehicles in Manhattan to help reduce its impact on the city's environment. All DHL units offer carbon-neutral services that allow customers to offset the carbon emissions of their shipments.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings administered by the Canadian Green Building Council. LEED Certification is based on six performance areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water efficiency, energy efficiency, materials selection, indoor environmental quality, and innovation and design.
