Elsevier Publishes Six New Books on Natural Disasters and Hazards

The New Books Include Five Volumes From the Elsevier Hazards and Disasters Series, and One About Studies of Superstorm Sandy

WALTHAM, MA--(Marketwired - December 11, 2014) - Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, today announced the publication of six new books on natural disasters and hazards. Five of the titles are part of the newly developed Elsevier Hazards and Disasters series edited by Dr. John "Jack" Shroder; the sixth title is Learning from the Impacts of Superstorm Sandy by J. Bret Bennington and E. Christa Farmer. All six books will be on display at Elsevier booth # 1813 at the 2014 American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting, December 15-19, in San Francisco.

Landslides are the most costly geo-hazard in the world, and often the cause or the result of other hazards and disasters such as tsunamis, earthquakes, wildfires, and volcanic eruptions. Landslide Hazards, Risks, and Disasters, one of the new books which is part of the Elsevier Hazards and Disasters series, makes a close and detailed examination of major mass movements and provides measures for more thorough and accurate monitoring, prediction, preparedness, and prevention. It takes a geoscientific approach to the topic while also discussing the impacts -- human-induced causes such as deforestation, blasting, and building construction -- underscoring the multi-disciplinary nature of the topic.

Dr. Shroder is an internationally renowned authority on geomorphology with unique insights on the geology and geography of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the Himalayas. He has served as the Editor-in- Chief of the Elsevier book series Developments in Earth Surface Processes and Editor of the Elsevier journal Geomorphology, and is author of Natural Resources in Afghanistan. Dr. Shroder was awarded Fulbright grants for work in Pakistan and Afghanistan, as well as National Science Foundation and National Geographic Society grants to Nanga Parbat Himalaya and Karakoram Himalaya.

Learning from the Impacts of Superstorm Sandy by J. Bret Bennington and E. Christa Farmer, summarizes the first scientific results from studies of the deadliest and most destructive hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season. It includes tide gauge measurements of storm surge, stable isotope variation in precipitation, analysis of the effect of beach nourishment -- among other factors -- on structural damage, and comparison with past storms through sediment analysis.
