Innovative Plan to Help PECO Customers Save More Energy and Money

Company files plan outlining new, enhanced energy efficiency and demand response programs

PECO filed a plan today with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) outlining new innovative energy efficiency programs to help customers save even more energy and money. The programs are part of PECO Smart Ideas, the company’s award-winning suite of energy efficiency and demand response programs for residential and business customers. Following PUC review and approval, the programs would be available beginning June, 2016.

In addition to the existing PECO Smart Ideas programs that include rebates for high-efficiency appliances, discounts on energy-efficient lighting and more, PECO’s new programs include enhanced online tools to provide customers more ways to track how they use energy. The plan also includes a new program that would provide a bill credit to customers using advanced in-home devices, including responsive thermostats, to manage their air conditioning during times of high energy use.

“We are transforming the future of energy for our customers, and these innovative programs are part of that effort,” said Liz Murphy, PECO vice president of Governmental and External Affairs. “Our highly successful programs coupled with these new technology-driven programs will be the perfect combination to drive energy efficiency for our customers.”

Since launching in 2009, more than 600,000 customers have participated in PECO Smart Ideas, reducing energy use by more than 2 million megawatt hours (MWh) and saving more than $477 million through energy efficiency rebates, incentives and energy savings on their monthly bill.

These savings make PECO Smart Ideas the largest utility-run energy efficiency and demand response suite of programs in Pennsylvania and are part of Pennsylvania Act 129. The third phase of Act 129 is designed to reduce overall customer energy use by 5 percent – or 1,962,659 MWh by May 31, 2021, and will help reduce customer demand for energy by 161 MW during high-use periods. The company’s filing is expected to be reviewed by the PUC by March 2016.
