Irving Oil and TransCanada Co-Sponsor National Speed Skating Competition

FREDERICTON, NB, March 20, 2015 /CNW/ - Irving Oil and TransCanada Corporation (TransCanada) have teamed up as co-sponsors for this year's Canada East Short Track Championships – contributing $15,000 to the national speed skating event, which is being hosted in Fredericton, New Brunswick, for the first time this year.

"You can't do an event like this without community partners," said Trevor Corey, President of the Fredericton Amateur Speed Skating Club and Chair of the Host Committee for this year's Canada East Short Track Championships in Fredericton. "Securing the Irving Oil and TransCanada co-sponsorship has been integral to the success of the Championships."

The Canada East Short Track Championships event is focused on young speed skaters in the Training to Train stage of development, which includes males 12-16 years of age and females 11-15 years of age. The event brings together the best skaters in this age category from the provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Ontario and the territory of Nunavut.

"Sports provide our young people with the opportunity to have fun while learning the life lessons of hard work, dedication and determination – the same principles that we embrace and value at Irving Oil," said Kevin Scott, Chief Human Resource Officer at Irving Oil. "We're proud to partner with TransCanada to co-sponsor this year's Canada East Short Track Championships."

The Canada East Short Track Championships event is one of two speed skating competitions at the national level in Canada that recognize the best developing skaters in the country. This year's host province will be represented by 24 athletes from across New Brunswick, with competitors from every speed skating club in the province.

"TransCanada is proud to support this championship and those who strive to be the best," says Patrick Lacroix, New Brunswick Lead, Energy East Pipeline Project. "We are committed to support organizations and initiatives that bring communities together and this sponsorship is just one of the ways TransCanada is supporting its neighbours in New Brunswick."

The Canada East Short Track Speed Skating Championship is taking place at the Grant Harvey Centre in Fredericton this weekend, from March 21 - 22. For more information about Canada East Short Track Championships, please visit www.speedskating.ca/events/canada-east-championships
