Minister Carr Concludes Visit to 2015 IEA Ministerial Meeting in Paris

PARIS, France, Nov. 18, 2015 /CNW/ - The Honourable Jim Carr, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, today concluded his first official visit to Paris, France, for the 2015 International Energy Agency's (IEA) Ministerial Meeting. The biennial meeting brought together representatives of close to 40 countries to discuss clean energy innovation, energy security and global energy cooperation.

Minister Carr's visit highlighted the Government of Canada's commitment to being an engaged and key player on clean energy and climate change ahead of the 21st Conference of Parties (COP21) meeting in Paris in two weeks' time.

The Minister met with several of his international counterparts, including Dr. Ernest Moniz, Secretary of Energy for the United States, and Mexican Energy Secretary Pedro Joaquin Coldwell, along with representatives of the European Commission. He took the opportunity to express Canada's deepest condolences to the people of France following last week's terrorist attacks in Paris. While in Paris, Minister Carr also:

  • Welcomed Mexico's accession to the IEA and its enhanced engagement with China, Indonesia and Thailand.
  • Reiterated Canada's commitment to working with its North American partners and the international community to achieve a clean and secure energy future.
  • Held bilateral meetings with H.E. Miguel Cañete, European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, as well as the Honourable Josh Frydenberg, Minister for Resources, Energy and Northern Australia, to discuss Canada's priorities on clean energy development, energy security and climate change.
  • Endorsed, with his IEA counterparts, the Ministerial Statement on Energy and Climate Change.
