NCKU Hosts International Symposium on Energy Technology and Strategy

The 2015 International Symposium on Energy Technology and Strategy (ISETS 2015) kicked off today at Chung Hwa Hall of the Y. S. Sun Green Building Research Center, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, with over 150 experts and scholars from the United States, Europe, and Asia, sharing research findings and insights on energy related issues.

NCKU President Huey-Jen Jenny Su extended her warm welcome to all the guests and gave opening remarks saying, “We have the pleasure and privilege to host this international conference for four consecutive years.”

She added, “This is very much organized by one of our leading center of excellence in the area of energy both in terms of technology and research.”

“And this particular field energy and energy related issues is very much rooted on the strength and niche of our university over the past eighty and four years,” Su noted.

Professor from NCKU’s Research Center for Energy Technology and Strategy (RCETS) Ta-Hui Lin said, “ISETS 2015 is organized by the National Energy Program Phase II (NEP-II) of Ministry of Science and Technology and RCETS. Beginning in 2011, RCETS has annually hosted the symposium.”

There are four sections included in the three-day symposium – Energy Strategies, Green Energy, Green Communities, and Research Activities of RCETS.

After the opening ceremony, Dr. Phyllis Yoshida from U.S Department of Energy (DOE) gave a talk on The Asia-Pacific on the Way to Paris.

Dr. Yoshida said, “Global science and technology and international cooperation has been issues that I worked on for many years in different capacities as a professor at the George Mason University in Virginia and for the United States government.”

She noted, “This fall is an extremely critical time for us to really step back and assess where we are in terms of clean energy technology and innovation and see what is in the realm of possibility of the next few years to address the risk associated with climate change.”

Later in the afternoon, Prof. Tsumoru Shintake from Okinawa Institute Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST) talked about ocean energy research at OIST.

Mr. Alven Lam from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) will give a talk on Green Energy in Housing and Urban Development on October 27.
