PECO Customers Save More Than $463 million With PECO Smart Ideas

Highly successful suite of energy efficiency programs help save customers more than 2 million megawatt hours

PECO customers have reduced their electric use by more than 2 million megawatt hours (MWh) with PECO Smart Ideas, the company’s highly successful suite of energy efficiency programs for residential and business customers. That’s about the same amount of electricity it takes to power all of New York City for about two weeks, more than 186,000 typical homes for a year, or the entire Internet for about four days. Since launching in 2009, PECO Smart Ideas has saved customers more than $463 million through energy efficiency rebates, incentives and energy savings on their monthly bill.

“Our customers are saving energy and money every day with PECO Smart Ideas,” said Craig Adams, PECO president and CEO. “We look forward to identifying even more programs and initiatives that transform how we use energy.”

PECO Smart Ideas offers many programs to help residential, business, government, nonprofit and institutional customers save energy and money. In total, PECO customers have received more than 438,000 rebates for energy efficient actions. Specifically customers have:

  • Purchased more than 12 million discounted LED and CFL bulbs through PECO Smart Lighting Discounts.
  • Received more than 7,200 in-home audits and assessments with PECO Smart House Call.
  • Recycled nearly 55,000 refrigerators and freezers with PECO Smart Appliance Recycling.
  • Received more than 7,400 rebates for equipment enhancements and energy-efficient construction measures through PECO Smart Ideas for your Business.

Since 2009, PECO Smart Ideas has received 10 industry awards, including three ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year Awards.

PECO Smart Ideas is part of the company’s support of Pennsylvania’s energy efficiency and demand response targets – Act 129. Act 129 required all Pennsylvania electric utilities to develop programs to help customers reduce energy use by 1 percent by May 31, 2011 and 3 percent by May 31, 2013. Act 129 also requires PECO customers to reduce their energy usage by an additional 2.9 percent by May 31, 2016, and by an additional 5 percent by 2021. PECO is currently working to develop new programs and initiatives to help achieve this goal.
