Point72 Names Mark Flannery Energy Sector Executive

Point72 Asset Management, L.P. (Point72), has named Credit Suisse’s former U.S. Head of Equity Research, Mark A. Flannery, to be the Sector Executive (SE) for the Firm’s Energy Sector in its Long/Short (L/S) equities business, Point72 President Doug Haynes announced today.

Mr. Flannery will begin at the Firm on November 2.

As SE, Mr. Flannery will act as the Energy Sector’s general manager, supporting and supervising the performance and professional development of all Energy Portfolio Managers and Sector teams.

Philip Villhauer, who has been serving as the Energy SE, will become SE for the Firm’s Industrials Sector. Mr. Villhauer will also continue to serve as Head of Global Trading. In turn, Perry Boyle, the Firm’s Head of Equities, who has been doubling as the Industrials SE, will step aside from his second role.

“Mark reflects the world-class talent and global expertise we have been able to attract to our Firm,” Mr. Haynes said. “He has worked in energy markets on three continents during his career and the perspective he brings will aid our global trading in energy. We are excited about the impact he will have on our L/S business.”

“Mark was an energy analyst for the first 17 years of his career, followed by six years as the Director of Research of Credit Suisse’s U.S. Equity Research Group,” Mr. Boyle said. “His background makes him well-suited to lead the Energy Sector and to act as a partner to our Investment Professionals.”

While Head of U.S. Equity Research at Credit Suisse, Mr. Flannery improved the internal development, growth, and promotion processes, and helped tighten compliance and approval processes. He held positions as Chairman of the company’s U.S. Research Review and Investment Policy Committees.

Prior to his role as Head of U.S. Equity Research, Mr. Flannery was Global Head of Energy Research at Credit Suisse from 2004 to 2009, leading a global team of 35. Mr. Flannery, who holds an MA in Modern Languages from the University of Oxford, St. Anne’s College, began his career as a European Oil and Gas Analyst at BZW in London, which was absorbed by Credit Suisse.

Mr. Flannery broadened his understanding of the global energy markets during two years as an Asian Oil and Gas Analyst in Hong Kong, before moving to New York, where he worked for nine years as a U.S. Integrated Oil & Gas Refining Analyst and Global Head of Energy Research.

In December 2009, Mr. Flannery became the Head of U.S. Equity Research, a leadership post he continued in until leaving to join Point72.
