RagingWire's Ashburn, Virginia and Sacramento, California Data Centers Earn EPA ENERGY STAR for Superior Energy Efficiency

650,000 Square Feet of Data Center Facilities Recognized for Performing in the Top 25 Percent of Similar Facilities Nationwide for Energy Efficiency

ASHBURN, VA--(Marketwired - March 27, 2015) - RagingWire Data Centers, the nation's premier data center provider and an NTT Communications group company, announced today that the company has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) ENERGY STAR certification for its Sacramento, California and Ashburn, Virginia data center facilities. ENERGY STAR recognition signifies that the data center buildings perform in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency and meet strict energy efficiency performance levels set by the EPA.

"Our continued improvements in energy efficient data center designs and green operations reflect our corporate commitment to policies and programs that promote environmental sustainability," said Jason Weckworth, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at RagingWire. "We are proud to have earned the EPA ENERGY STAR certification across all of our data center facilities. As we expand our capacity in Northern Virginia and Northern California and enter new markets in the United States, we are committed to designing, building, and operating environmentally friendly data centers."

Colocation facilities can face greater energy efficiency challenges than data centers designed for a single tenant, as the colocation data centers must support diverse computing environments and power densities. As RagingWire delivers colocation solutions with 100% availability and high density power, these challenges can become even greater. RagingWire overcame these challenges by successfully implementing efficiency upgrades, leveraging system wide management and monitoring with its N-MatrixSM Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) system, and using reclaimed water and airside and waterside economizers in its chiller plants. These efforts led to significantly improved power usage effectiveness (PUE), annual savings for RagingWire and its customers, and earning the prestigious ENERGY STAR designation.

In 2008, RagingWire launched its energy efficiency initiative at the 250,000 square foot CA1 facility in Sacramento, California, and later became the first ENERGY STAR certified data center facility focused on multi-tenant colocation services. The adjacent 250,000 square foot CA2 data center in Sacramento, California, as well as the 150,000 square foot VA1 data center in Ashburn, Virginia have also earned the ENERGY STAR certification. Combined, these three facilities have 650,000 square feet of space and deliver over 52 megawatts of critical IT power.

"As part of our ongoing green data center initiative, we have developed consistent methods for monitoring energy performance and utilized design and operations best practices across our extensive data center platform," said Alex Naderi, Senior Director of Quality Assurance at RagingWire. "These efforts were instrumental in being recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency with ENERGY STAR certifications for all of our data centers."

ENERGY STAR was introduced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. Today, the ENERGY STAR label can be found on more than 65 different kinds of products, in 1.4 million new homes, and in 20,000 commercial buildings and industrial plants that meet strict energy-efficiency specifications set by the EPA. Over the past 20 years, American families and businesses have saved more than $230 billion on utility bills and prevented more than 1.8 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions with help from ENERGY STAR.

"Improving the energy efficiency of our nation's buildings is critical to protecting our environment," said Jean Lupinacci, Chief of the ENERGY STAR Commercial and Industrial Branch. "From the boiler room to the board room, organizations are leading the way by making their buildings more efficient and earning EPA's ENERGY STAR certification."

RagingWire has improved its energy performance by managing energy strategically across the entire organization and by making cost-effective improvements to its buildings. In addition to the CA1, CA2, and VA1 data centers, RagingWire implemented this approach in its newest data center CA3, with 180,000 square feet of space and 14 megawatts of power. The EPA ENERGY STAR evaluation process is already in progress for CA3. The VA2 data center in Ashburn, Virginia with 140,000 square feet of space and 14 megawatts of power is currently under construction and is being built to ENERGY STAR standards.

RagingWire was also recognized by the EPA as a "Low Carbon IT Champion" and featured in a case study and public service announcement in recognition of its significant energy efficiency measures, resulting in carbon reduction equivalent to annual emissions of over 1,000 cars.
