Salesforce Announces New Renewable Energy Agreement

Agreement for 24 megawatts of new Texas wind farm advances Salesforce's commitment to achieving 100 percent renewable energy Salesforce wind energy agreements to date expected to produce more than company's total electricity use last fiscal year

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Salesforce (NYSE: CRM), the Customer Success Platform and world's #1 CRM company, today announced it is doubling down on its renewable energy commitments by signing a second energy agreement, this time for 24 megawatts (MW) of a new wind farm in Texas.

The electricity generated under the 12-year virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) is expected to be 102,000 megawatt hours annually. This energy agreement comes on the heels of the company's first VPPA for 40 MW of a new wind farm in West Virginia that is expected to generate 125,000 megawatt hours of wind energy annually.

Together, the two agreements are expected to generate more electricity than Salesforce's global electricity use in its full fiscal year 2015. Both the Texas and the West Virginia wind farms are scheduled to be operational in December 2016.

These agreements mark the company's most significant steps towards achieving its goal to power 100 percent of its global operations with renewable energy.

Comments on the News

  • "This agreement, coupled with the announcement we made just a few weeks ago, represents the biggest step in our company's history towards meeting our goal to be powered 100 percent by renewable energy," said Mark Hawkins, CFO, Salesforce. "We're delivering a cleaner cloud by embracing sustainability in every aspect of our business—from how we deliver our products, to our internal operations, to our focus on clean and renewable energy."
  • "With this second energy agreement in as many months, Salesforce has shown that it is dedicated to leading on the renewable energy front," said Herve Touati, managing director at Rocky Mountain Institute and head of its Business Renewables Center. "They are laying out a path for other cloud providers to follow."

Sustainability at Salesforce
Salesforce leverages the power of its people and products to reduce the impact that the company and its customers have on the planet. From how it delivers its products, to its focus on renewable energy, Salesforce incorporates sustainability into all aspects of its business. Salesforce's multi-tenant cloud platform makes it possible to use a remarkably small number of servers as efficiently as possible. In fact, Salesforce's core platform is 98 percent more carbon efficient on average than on-premises software. By moving to the cloud, Salesforce customers avoided emitting more than one million tons of carbon in fiscal year 2015.

To support the de-carbonization of the global economy, Salesforce has pledged to:

  • Achieve net-zero greenhouse-gas emissions by 2050
  • Eventually power 100 percent of global operations with renewable energy
  • Continue pursuing LEED certification for its largest office spaces and other innovative green building initiatives
  • Leverage its people, technology and resources to help environmental nonprofits around the world
