OWENSBORO, Ky., Jan. 22, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The Kentucky Chamber of Commerce and the Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management announced January 21 that Southern Star Central Gas Pipeline, Inc. was among 100 companies recognized as Best Places to Work in the Commonwealth.  Southern Star was among 34 award winners in the medium-size (150-499 U. S. employees) category.  Final rankings will be announced at an awards dinner April 20, 2016 at the Lexington Convention Center in Lexington, Kentucky.

Winners are selected based on a selection process managed by Best Companies Group.  Selection criteria is based on data provided by the company about its policies and procedures and responses to an anonymous employee survey.  Survey topics included employee perceptions of the company's culture, leadership, work environment, employee development, compensation, benefits, and communications.

Southern Star requested that its almost 500 employees, regardless of whether or not they were among the approximately 180 located in Kentucky, be able to take the survey though only those located in Kentucky were required to do so for the contest.  Southern Star's response rate was 86% across its eight state operating system and 90% in Owensboro, Kentucky, its headquarters location.

"Southern Star's vision is to be the Best Pipeline in North America," said Jerry Morris, the company's President & Chief Executive Officer.  "That starts with having the best employees anywhere and providing them the best overall employment experience we can on a practical basis.  We are honored and proud to be recognized as a Best Place to Work in Kentucky and believe we are likewise the best place to work in all the communities in which our employees live and work across the Midwest."

Morris said the survey used by Best Places to Work is a robust tool, and Southern Star will use the data provided to further improve employees' work experiences and careers.  He said with 86% of employees responding system wide, the survey provides significant information about what employees value and areas where Southern Star and its team can continue to improve.

"It's humbling to have the Kentucky Chamber and Kentucky SHRM recognize the accomplishments of our employees," Morris said.  "Make no mistake, no company is a best place to work in and of itself.   A company is a best place to work by having the best employees anywhere.  We try to make sure each employee knows we honor and value them and try to provide them an exceptional working experience."
