UPDATE - Advanced Disposal Begins Macon, Ga. Residential Waste Management Services on January 4, 2016
MACON, GA--(Marketwired - January 04, 2016) - Advanced Disposal, an integrated environmental services company, will begin providing residential garbage and yard waste collection services to the former incorporated Macon, Ga. communities on January 4, 2016. The Macon-Bibb Commission's decision to privatize certain waste management services within the former City limits only affects garbage and yard waste.
Starting this Monday, Advanced Disposal will provide weekly garbage and yard waste service to over 25,000 homes within the former Macon city limits utilizing 95-gallon carts and automated collection vehicles for the garbage collection. The yard waste will continue to be collected utilizing traditional rear load collection trucks. Thirteen of the eighteen trucks are fueled by cleaner burning compressed natural gas (CNG). City staff will collect the residential recycling every other week, as well as on-call bulk waste and excess yard waste (over 2 cubic yards) within the combined Macon-Bibb County limits.
The privatization of the former city limits of Macon -- now a consolidated government with Bibb County -- is the second major residential community to privatize with Advanced Disposal within the last 18 months. The City of Detroit chose to contract with the company for residential solid waste services for 125,000 homes in June 2014. Privatization continues to grow across the U.S., as municipalities realize the potential benefits of a public-private partnership. These benefits can include cost savings, quality of service, management efficiency and risk mitigation. In many cases, a solid waste public-private partnership such as between Advanced Disposal and Macon-Bibb County can stabilize government tax rates.
"Over the last several years, we have seen increasing inquiries from local governments as they contemplate the many benefits of privatization. We provide our municipal clients with solutions to their needs that includes; cost containment, service guarantees, risk protection, environmental stewardship and economic sustainability," stated Charlie Gray, Advanced Disposal's region vice president. "This privatization strengthens our existing Middle Georgia footprint, and we look forward to providing our newest Macon-Bibb County customers with continued environmentally sound, customer care-focused service."
Advanced Disposal has also invested locally in Macon-Bibb County this September, building a $1.6 million Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fueling station at its hauling facility. CNG is an alternative fuel used for internal combustion engines. It generates low hydrocarbon emissions and is considered a clean energy. While the U.S. imports more than 47 percent of the oil it uses, 98 percent of the natural gas used in the U.S. is produced in North America. In the U.S. alone, Natural Gas Vehicles offset the use of about 400 million gallons of gasoline in 2013, and that number is only increasing, according to the America Natural Gas Vehicles for America.
Thirteen of the company's trucks will fill up at the station every night and keep the greater Macon-Bibb community cleaner and greener every day. Customers will notice the logo on the trucks that reads, 'powered by CNG.' A CNG truck costs between $30,000 and $40,000 more than a comparable diesel truck. Approximately 60 percent of the Macon fleet is fueled by CNG and this number will increase as the company replaces retiring diesel trucks once their useful life has expired.
"We're proud of the fact that as of the end of 2015, approximately 15 percent of our company-wide fleet is running on CNG," said Advanced Disposal CEO Richard Burke. "We continue to invest in CNG to not only keep our fleet running cleaner and to create a more sustainable Earth, but this cleaner fuel source also reduces operations costs thereby enhancing stakeholder returns. We are excited to utilize these innovative vehicles locally, building this new public-private partnership and providing unparalleled solid waste management services to Macon-Bibb County."
