Altus Midstream first to implement new Honeywell UOP technology

Hydrocarbon Engineering Oil & Gas Publishers Note: We are seeing that investors are demanding returns in months rather than years. The proper use of technology in the Energy, Oil and Gas, Renewable markets is critical in lowering CapEx. Honeywell has recently announced that Altus Midstream has implemented OrtloffTM SRX technology from Honeywell UOP at its Diamond Central cryogenic gas processing complex, marking the first global application of the new technology to recover valuable NGLs from feed gas. The facility in Reeves County, Texas, US, began operation in May 2019, and can now process up to 600 million ft3/d of natural gas. The technology passed performance testing while recovering more than 99% of ethane and 100% of propane in ethane recovery mode, and more than 99% propane in ethane rejection mode at design capacity. Ben Owens, Vice President and General Manager of UOP’s gas processing technologies business, said: “The Ortloff SRX technology[Read More…]

Microsoft pledges to remove more carbon than it emits by 2030

Houston Chronicle Microsoft on Thursday announced plans to remove more carbon than it emits by the end of the decade, a pledge that addresses the climate change crisis more aggressively than many of its tech rivals. The software giant, which announced the initiative at a news conference at its Redmond, Washington, headquarters, also plans to remove all the carbon emissions it has generated since its founding in 1975 by 2050. Working to remove carbon emissions to prevent further global warming is “far and away the biggest challenge, I think, that humanity has ever been presented with,” Microsoft President Brad Smith said in a meeting with journalists Monday in New York. Microsoft’s initiative goes a few steps beyond what crosstown rival Amazon announced in September. The e-commerce giant, which competes with Microsoft in the booming business of cloud computing, said at the time it would implement strategies to be at net[Read More…]

BP invests in Chinese AI energy management tech specialist R&B

BP BP Ventures has invested in energy management specialist R&B, BP’s first venture into artificial intelligence (AI) technology in China. R&B’s energy management systems are designed to predict, control and improve a building’s energy use, supporting BP Alternative Energy’s focus on low-carbon power, storage, digital energy value chain and wider Energy as a Service (EaaS) offers. Buildings currently account for one third of the world’s total energy consumption. R&B’s Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applies AI techniques to energy diagnostics and optimization in the commercial and industrial (C&I) sector, processing data to generate valuable insights and recommendations of how to improve energy efficiency and enhance predictive maintenance in buildings. This enables building managers to make informed decisions to optimise energy performance and, as a result, reduce carbon emissions. The $3.6 million investment is part of R&B’s latest funding round, which was led by BP Ventures and supported by CLP Innovation Ventures Limited, a subsidiary of CLP Holdings Limited, and JAFCO Asia. Nearly $1B Gulf Coast Ammonia plant in Texas City to begin construction

Houston Chronicle A nearly $1 billion Gulf Coast Ammonia plant to help manufacture fertilizers received final approval to begin construction this year in Texas City near Galveston, the companies said Wednesday. The plant would produce 1.3 million tons of ammonia per year from nitrogen gas and hydrogen feedstock with an estimated completion date in 2023. The project would create more than 40 permanent jobs and about 1,000 temporary construction positions. The project, which has faced opposition from environmentalists, the seafood industry and more, was developed by Miami-based Agrifos, but has now been acquired and jointly funded by the Connecticut-based private equity firm Starwood Energy Group and the German energy trading firm Mabanaft. The new backers are providing the influx of capital to commence construction. “This new world-class facility will meet domestic and global demands for nitrogen-based fertilizers to improve crop production and yields to feed the world’s growing population, as well as specialty[Read More…]

Baker Hughes enters three-way deal to boost AI in the oil field

Houston Chronicle Houston oilfield service company Baker Hughes has entered into a three-way agreement and partnership to boost the adoption of artificial intelligence technology in the oil and natural gas industry. Baker Hughes, tech giant Microsoft and Silicon Valley artificial intelligence company C3.ai have signed an agreement to work together to develop and deploy the cost-cutting technology for industry customers across the globe, the companies announced on Tuesday morning. “Companies that adopt this technology will be the next Amazon and those that don’t adopt will be the next Sears,” C3.ai founder and CEO Tom Siebel told the Houston Chronicle. The agreement comes less than six months after Baker Hughes and C3:ai launched a joint venture to deploy artificial intelligence in the oil patch. The two will now be augmenting the technology they developed using Microsoft’s cloud computing platform Azure. Seeking to get ahead of the coming digital transformation in the oil and natural gas industry,[Read More…]

Satellite images show activity pick-up at Saudi Aramco’s Abqaiq site

Source: Reuters Satellite imagery of Saudi Arabia’s Abqaiq oil processing plant, which was damaged in an attack on Sept. 14, show signs of a return to thermal activity, data analytics firm Kayrros said on Thursday. Kayrros also said that flaring – the burning of gas from oilfields – was at “usual minimal levels” at Ghawar, Khurais and Abqaiq. The low flaring levels are in line with the resumption of gas compression activities at the Abqaiq plant, highlighting Saudi Aramco attempts to restore production levels, Kayrros said. Sources told Reuters on Wednesday that Saudi Arabia has restored oil production capacity to 11.3 million barrels per day, maintaining a faster than expected recovery after the Sept. 14 attacks on its facilities. “Of the five NGL (natural gas liquids) compression units identified by Kayrros, three units show signs of thermal activity, hinting NGL compression is resuming,” Kayrros said. The images taken on Wednesday also show[Read More…]

BP launches gas cloud imaging, drones to monitor methane emissions

From The Houston Chronicle BP said Tuesday it is launching a new system of gas cloud imaging and aerial drones to monitor and help reduce methane emissions around the world. The British energy major said it will deploy a system of continuous measurement of methane emissions for all of its new major projects worldwide and that it will use frequent drone flights to detect methane emissions at its existing wells ranging from West Texas’ Permian Basin to the United Kingdom’s North Sea. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas and the primary component of natural gas. Methane emissions have long been considered the Achilles’ heel of the natural gas sector and the argument that gas is a cleaner-burning energy alternative to both coal and crude oil. The booming Permian, for instance, has undergone a massive increase in methane emissions from natural gas flaring and venting in recent years, driven by higher[Read More…]
