Will help effort to expedite advanced nuclear energy power, maintain current fleet

WASHINGTON, Aug. 11, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Former Nuclear Regulatory Commission member Jeff Merrifield has joined the ClearPath Foundation as a legal adviser to our Advisory Board to help the organization accelerate advanced nuclear energy technologies and identify excessive regulatory burdens that have stymied the existing fleet of reactors.

"Jeff's extensive experience on the NRC and in his years since as a private expert makes him extraordinarily qualified to help ClearPath," ClearPath Founder and CEO Jay Faison said. "He will particularly guide us in looking for ways to streamline government regulations and focus lawmakers on other fiscally-responsible means of accelerating the next generation of advanced nuclear power."

"From its inception, the Republican Party has been forward thinking and optimistic," Merrifield said. "More than ever, the GOP needs to lead on our nation's energy future by offering clear, market-based solutions that can spur growth, job creation and exports, while minimizing cost and environmental consequences."

Merrifield served as a NRC commissioner from 1998 to 2007 and was previously a legal adviser on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. Since he left NRC, Merrifield has worked in the private sector, including as a partner at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP. In that role, Merrifield is a legal advisor to two leading advanced reactor developers. Merrifield is also advising utilities on meeting the complex web of physical security requirements imposed by NRC and testified this year on the advancement of advanced reactors before House and Senate committees.
