Petroleum Engineering is an integral career, especially for students who are interested in becoming physicists, environmentalists, or geologists. While the main definition for petroleum engineers points directly to the production of crude oil or natural gas, this is an exciting field for anyone who is interested in learning more about the science of obtaining energy sources.

Petroleum Engineers make a great deal of money, but this is tempered by the vast amount of education and training these professionals undergo. The petroleum engineering programs are some of the most expensive in America, which led to the creation of the Most Affordable Petroleum Engineering Programs ranking.

"Generally, there are three main types of PEs. First, there are drilling engineers, who are responsible for either drilling new wells into geological formations or extracting resources from old and decommissioned wells. Then there are production engineers; they're the ones that take over once drilling is complete and oversee how much of a given resource is being extracted. Finally, we have the reservoir engineers, who specialize in determining how much exactly a reservoir is capable of holding," Christian Amondson, Managing Editor of College Choice, said at the Best Bachelor's in Petroleum Engineering Programs ranking's release.

Mr. Amondson also spoke about the release of the Most Affordable Petroleum Engineering Programs, citing why this education can be costly: "Locating, drilling, extracting, refining, and transporting these resources is a costly, complex, and in some cases risky endeavor, and the training involved in order to do so is extensive. Most petroleum engineers specialize in one of three primary areas—drilling, production, or reservoir engineering. These are all necessary steps in transforming raw materials into usable products."

College Choice curated both the Best Bachelor's in Petroleum Engineering Programs and the Most Affordable Petroleum Engineering Programs using many of the same factors, such as employment rate after graduation, student retention, academic reputation, networking opportunities, the full cost of attendance, and more. This information was taken from individual schools' websites, the U.S. News and World Report site, and The National Center for Education Statistics.

The College Choice 2016 ranking for Best Bachelor's in Petroleum Engineering Programs is led by the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. It is followed by the Colorado School of Mines and Stanford University.
