Cumulative Revenue from Investment in Biogas Production Capacity Is Expected to Reach $25.8 Billion between 2015 and 2024, According to Navigant Research

Innovation in feedstock conversion rates and controls systems is expected to be necessary to improve the competitiveness of biogas, report finds

A new report from Navigant Research examines the global biogas market, including policy issues and market drivers, with forecasts for capacity and revenue, segmented by feedstock source, end use, region, and selected country, through 2024.

Biogas power generation, which is widely used for onsite generation by industrial-scale facilities and distributed customers, enjoys favorable regulatory support in many markets and is expected to play a significant role in meeting expanding renewable energy targets. In addition, California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard and the July 2014 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ruling promoting biogas as a cellulosic fuel provide the industry with a platform for expansion. Click to tweet: According to a new report from Navigant Research, global cumulative revenue from investment in biogas production capacity is expected to reach $25.8 billion between 2015 and 2024.

“The market’s ability to develop new business cases and opportunities is really key to its expansion,” says Roberto Rodriguez Labastida, senior research analyst with Navigant Research. “Because of the biogas industry’s natural fragmentation, significant efforts are expected to be necessary to find potential markets—either regional or for new end uses, like transportation—to reach a point in which all stakeholders are aligned.”

From a technical standpoint, breakthroughs in feedstock conversion rates and innovation around control systems is expected to be necessary to improve the competitiveness of biogas and unlock the potential of higher-cost resources, according to the report. While biogas feedstocks are available worldwide, logistical challenges make power and fuel generation from biogas viable in only a narrow set of circumstances where organic matter is available in large quantities and in continuous supply.

The report, Market Data: Renewable Natural Gas, analyzes the global biogas market, focusing on four feedstock sources: waste, industrial, agricultural, and sewage. Policy issues and market drivers are detailed for each region. Global market forecasts for capacity and revenue, segmented by feedstock source, end use (electricity, renewable natural gas injection, and transport), region, and selected country, extend through 2024. The report also includes a discussion of key inflection points to help shape the biogas market over the next several years. An Executive Summary of the report is available for free download on the Navigant Research website.
