Automation Agreement Follows Successful Waste-to-Energy Project in
Central Switzerland
Emerson Process Management, a global business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR),
will provide process automation technologies and services for current
and future waste-to-energy projects of Hitachi Zosen Inova.
Emerson’s automation technologies, combined with its expertise and
experience, help plants operate reliably and safely with minimal
downtime and maintenance. Zurich-based Hitachi Zosen Inova specializes
in thermal and biological treatment of municipal waste, and with
experience on more than 600 projects worldwide, is a leader in the
generation of energy using waste as fuel.
Under a global framework agreement, Emerson has been selected as a
preferred supplier responsible for providing automation technologies
including control and safety systems, predictive maintenance software,
control valves and measurement devices, and services such as
engineering, project management and lifecycle care.
The agreement formalizes the relationship between the two companies
following a successful project at Perlen, near Lucerne, Switzerland. The
US$319 million (CHF 320 million) Perlen project is the largest climate
protection project in central Switzerland. The facility is set to
produce 155,000 MWh of electricity per year, covering the energy
requirements of nearly 38,000 households, and will supply 320,000 MWh of
steam to an adjacent paper mill.
“We are working in close collaboration with Emerson on a number of
ongoing energy-from-waste installations,” said Douglas Else-Jack, head
of supply management at Hitachi Zosen Inova. “The successful completion
of the Perlen project demonstrates our confidence in Emerson’s expertise
is fully justified.”
Hitachi Zosen Inova supplied a complete advanced combustion system,
boiler and flue gas treatment at the Perlen plant, while Emerson
provided engineering, installation, commissioning, startup and servicing
of over 600 critical measurement instruments. Using Emerson’s advanced
measurement technologies that incorporate a range of diagnostic
functions, operators will be able to optimize plant performance and
minimize maintenance.
“Hitachi Zosen Inova is showing the way by combining innovative
solutions with tried and tested technology, and we are delighted to help
them meet their customers’ needs,” said Roel Van Doren, president of
Emerson Process Management - Europe. “Using Emerson’s advanced
automation technology and project management services to enable safe and
efficient plant operation, together we can make a significant
contribution to environmentally friendly power generation.”
Emerson is currently working with Hitachi Zosen Inova on further
waste-to-energy projects in Europe, including three in the U.K.
