EnOcean at Strategies in Light 2019: Self-powered switches and sensors push wireless LED lighting control to future IoT level

At booth #9811, technology provider EnOcean will be showing the market’s unique wireless and self-powered Easyfit control devices for Bluetooth® lighting systems. Another show highlight will be the comprehensive, DLC-qualified Easyfit lighting control portfolio based on the EnOcean wireless standard at 902 MHz.

SALT LAKE CITY and LAS VEGAS, Jan. 22, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In the 20th year of Strategies in Light (February 27 – March 1, 2019), it’s all about ‘advancing the future of light.’ One of the trending topics is lighting systems becoming the data backbone of intelligent control. EnOcean, world leader in energy harvesting wireless technology, will be demonstrating how self-powered wireless control devices deliver the requested data for this digitalization of buildings and services – highly flexible, maintenance-free and easy to install.

At booth #9811, visitors to the show can experience EnOcean’s Easyfit portfolio which covers self-powered switches and sensors for Bluetooth® lighting systems as well as a full range of wireless sensors, switches, LED fixture controllers and a commissioning tool for lighting control based on the EnOcean standard at 902 MHz. All Easyfit wireless control solutions can be easily added to existing buildings during an upgrade to LED lighting. EnOcean will also be exhibiting controls from multiple other EnOcean Alliance member companies.

“Lighting is one of the pioneer industries of the Internet of Things, the IoT. With LED technology and expanding networking abilities, lighting evolved within only a few years from a simple illumination element to a core communication instrument of digital buildings,” said Troy Davis, Sales Director, EnOcean Inc. “Wireless and self-powered control devices are the most flexible ready-to-use and maintenance-free solution to achieve the full data potential of intelligent LED lighting control in new builds and retrofits. Powering various leading wireless standards with our energy harvesting technology, EnOcean offers its OEMs and partners of the lighting industry self-powered control devices for almost all usage scenarios in the IoT.”

Self-powered Bluetooth® occupancy sensor

An EnOcean show highlight is the industry's first self-powered Bluetooth® occupancy sensor, (EMDCB) which was recently launched to the market. The sensor integrates small solar cells to use light as its energy source. Thanks to EnOcean’s energy harvesting technology it can operate under normal conditions using only the energy generated from the environment. An additional energy storage element stores the harvested energy to bridge a period of time when no light is available to ensure an uninterrupted operation. EMDCB detects occupancy and light levels and therefore enables demand-based lighting control or room occupancy management. The wireless communication is based on Bluetooth® Low Energy (BLE) and uses AES 128 telegram authentication.

Battery-free Bluetooth® switches

The new sensor complements EnOcean’s battery-free wireless Easyfit switches for Bluetooth® lighting systems available in US design (ESRPB/EDRPB) and European design (EWSSB/EWSDB). The Easyfit switches gain their energy by the press of a button and are therefore maintenance-free, freely positionable and allow flexible control as well as intuitive usage. With the combination of self-powered Easyfit Bluetooth® switches and sensors, EnOcean offers a portfolio of maintenance-free control options for manufacturers utilizing Bluetooth® mesh lighting solutions. At Strategies in Light, EnOcean will also be showing prototypes of additional energy harvesting Bluetooth® sensor solutions providing data such as accelerometers, temperature and humidity.

Easyfit Bluetooth® switches and sensors have a Near Field Communication (NFC) interface to be easily integrated and commissioned for lighting control systems via a NFC reader, a smartphone or a tablet. Within the system, the switches and sensors communicate with lighting fixture controllers and/or an IoT gateway to provide the needed data to the platform in use.

Portfolio of DLC-qualified self-powered EnOcean lighting control

Besides the Bluetooth® offering, EnOcean’s Easyfit brand also covers a complete ready-to-use wireless LED lighting control solution based on the EnOcean wireless standard in 902 MHz, (ISO/IEC 14543-3-11) which is optimized for reliable ultra-low power communication in buildings. The products are included in the DLC Qualified Product List (QPL) so that EnOcean customers across the US can pursue retrofit and new projects that may qualify for higher utility rebates with a QPL solution, e.g. for schools, offices or warehouses.

The complete EnOcean LED control portfolio consists of LEDRU and LEDDU fixture/zone controllers, self-powered, wireless light switches, occupancy and light level sensors as well as the Navigan™ remote commissioning software. Via this commissioning interface, settings such as thresholds, dimming levels, ramp speeds, task tuning, timers or Title 24-compliant parameters can be changed wirelessly.

Controls and lighting manufacturers can also create EnOcean-enabled products by using the extensive line of Dolphin by EnOcean RF modules and EnOcean-enabled LED drivers.

EnOcean at the show floor

In addition to its complete Easyfit portfolio for intelligent lighting control via Bluetooth® and EnOcean radio standards, EnOcean will also be demonstrating at the show self-powered switches using Zigbee 2.4 GHz with integrated energy harvesting technology from EnOcean.

EnOcean partners and customers exhibiting at Strategies in Light include Fulham Co., Inc. (#11318), Hubbell Lighting Components (#11606), MEAN WELL USA INC (#11206), Silvair (#9913) and Signify (#11512).
