EPRI Announces Changes to Board of Directors

PALO ALTO, Calif., April 04, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) announced the election of a new chair and four members to the Board of Directors, as well as the appointment of three external directors, effective today.

Patricia L. Kampling, who has served on the EPRI Board of Directors since 2014, becomes Chair of the Board. Kampling is Chair and Chief Executive Officer of Alliant Energy Corporation based in Madison, Wisconsin.

She joined Alliant Energy in 2005, as Vice President of Finance and transitioned into various leadership positions within the finance area including Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer. In 2011, Kampling became President and Chief Operating Officer and assumed her current position in April 2012. Prior to joining Alliant, she spent more than 20 years in various leadership positions at Exelon Corporation, including serving as Exelon Enterprises Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer and the Treasurer of Commonwealth Edison.

Mike Hummel, General Manager and Chief Executive Officer of Salt River Project (SRP), David J. Tudor, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of Associated Electric Cooperative, Inc. of Missouri, Dr. Jae-hoon Chung, Chief Executive Officer of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) and Jan Oberholzer, Chief Operating Officer of Eskom Holdings, were named to four-year terms.

Hummel has worked at Arizona-based SRP more than 35 years. Prior to his current role, he was Deputy General Manager, Resources and Finance, with responsibility for activities associated with Financial and Corporate Services; Strategy, Resource Planning and Acquisitions; Environmental Management, Policy and Compliance; Power Generation, and Power Delivery. He was named Associate General Manager and Chief Power System Executive in July 2011, responsible for electric system planning, engineering, operations, and generation.

Tudor held several leadership positions prior to joining Associated Electric, including: President and Chief Executive Officer of Champion Energy Services, a retail electric provider serving customers in deregulated natural gas and electric energy markets; President and Chief Executive Officer of ACES Power Marketing, an Indianapolis-based commodity risk management company; and Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of PG&E Energy Trading.

Dr. Chung began his government career as Deputy Director of the Ministry of Industry Resources and entered the energy sector when appointed Deputy Minister for Energy and Resources of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy. Subsequently, he became President of the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT). With his background in the energy and economy sectors, Dr. Chung has facilitated the development of Korea’s nuclear power industry. He was appointed President and CEO of KHNP, and in 2018 was elected a director of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO).

Oberholzer has been the Chief Operating Officer of Johannesburg-based Eskom Holdings SOC Limited since July 2018, adding responsibility for Caretaking Group Executive Capital since January. He has worked with Eskom for 27 of his 38 years in the industry, serving in various positions, such as leading the 18000-megawatt generation and transmission capital program expansion, successfully managing one of the largest electrification programs in the world and serving as Chief Operating Officer of the Distribution Business. Oberholzer has also served as Country Director of Zambia at SN Power and as Managing Director of Mechanical, Electrical and Power at Stefanutti Stocks Holdings Limited.

The Board also announced the appointment of three external directors to four-year terms: Sheryl Carter, a Director at the Natural Resources Defense Council, Dan Ford, Managing Director and Head of North America Utilities Equity Research at UBS; and, Dr. Arun Majumdar, an engineering professor at Stanford University.

Carter is Director of NRDC’s Power Sector work in the Climate & Clean Energy Program, working to transform the energy system to reduce its public health, environmental, and climate impacts, as well as increase energy equity and affordability.  She has represented NRDC before utility commissions, legislative bodies and in other forums at the state, regional, and national levels since 1995. Carter also previously served on EPRI’s Advisory Council and EPRI’s Board of Directors from 2013-2018.

Ford joined UBS in 2018 and chaired EPRI’s Advisory Council. Prior to joining UBS in January 2018, he served as Managing Director at Barclays covering a group of 61 energy, utility and environmental service company stocks. Previously, he covered electric utility stocks at Lehman Brothers, ABN AMRO, HSBC Securities, Dean Witter, Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley. With more than 25 years of experience in the industry, Mr. Ford has received numerous awards.

Dr. Majumdar is the Jay Precourt Provostial Chair Professor at Stanford, a faculty member of the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering and co-Director of the Precourt Institute for Energy.  He has previously served as the founding Director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA-E); a senior advisor to Secretary of Energy, Dr. Steven Chu; and Vice President of Energy at Google.
