The Whiting rock lab allows the company to differentiate between different strategies in different basins, and sand volumes can be highly influential in drilling and ultimate recovery, Whiting Petroleum Senior VP of Exploration and Development Mark Williams told Angie Austin at EnerCom’s The Oil & Gas Conference 21.

“Whiting has had its rock lab here in our offices in Denver for about 5 years now. It has had a tremendous impact on our ability to differentiate between how the Bakken works in the different parts of the basin. What that does is allows us to customize our drilling and particularly our completion solutions, how we address the Bakken and how we design our completions for example. In this other part of the basin we use a lot more water, it has to do with our understanding of the reservoir there, it likes to imbibe water, and that’s learning that comes out of our lab. … The lab allows us to ask questions and answer those questions very, very rapidly.”

“There are really two main drivers of performance, one is sand volume, the other one is entry point. Over the last year and a half, we have tuned our completions to address that.”
