- Make sure external vents are free of obstructions – As gas furnaces operate, they need to be vented. A furnace vent, or flue, directs the byproducts safely outside the home and away from occupants. Check to make sure they're not obstructed by leaves, nests or other debris that could cause dangerous backups of fumes.
- Regularly check the pilot light – If the pilot light is continuously turning off, the danger of gas invading the home is increased. Turn the gas line off and call a professional as soon as possible to have the furnace inspected.
- Install a carbon monoxide detector – Carbon monoxide, a byproduct of natural gas systems, is colorless, odorless and highly dangerous. Blocked flues, cracked heat exchangers and other issues can prevent this gas from being contained and safely vented out and away from the home. It is imperative to have working detectors in place to alert any occupants if the gas enters any living spaces of the home. Make sure detectors are replaced at least every five years.
- Never move or attempt repair of a gas appliance – Only licensed professionals should ever disconnect and move or repair natural gas appliances like furnaces or ovens. Attempting to move an appliance or disconnect a line could cause a leak, and a subsequent small spark could result in a fire or explosion.
- Maintain an annual tune-up schedule – Having a professional inspect and tune-up the heating system annually is a reliable way to ensure optimum performance, eliminate any potential safety hazards and even preserve the warranty. Many manufacturers mandate that proof of annual maintenance is readily available before compensation for failures can be arranged under warranty.
"The most important tip we can give is that if you smell gas, vacate the residence immediately and call a professional from a safe distance," Giannone said. "It's best to err on the side of caution than to risk safety over attempting to find a leak or shut off the line."
