Forget Red or Blue – Philly Got a Little Greener This Week Thanks to WGL Energy

As everyone arrives in Philadelphia for four days of convention activities, the political energy is palpable. Unfortunately, energy consumption and emissions are also going to be on the rise around Philly as travel and transportation increase and convention events keep the lights on around the clock.

To help offset this increased energy usage, WGL Energy Services, Inc. (WGL Energy) has donated enough carbon offsets to counterbalance the hotel stays of all 28,000 convention attendees for all four days of the Democratic event.

“We are proud to be greening all of the convention attendees’ hotel stays by donating carbon offsets,” stated Alicia LaRoche, Manager of Green Energy Products at WGL Energy. “This effort demonstrates our commitment to providing a full spectrum of Energy Answers, including wind and solar power, which support a sustainable and renewable energy future.”

Carbon offsets are an affordable and innovative way to counterbalance emissions resulting from everyday activities such as travel and energy use. Carbon Offsets from WGL Energy specifically are Green-e® Climate certified and derived from verified carbon reduction projects in the waste management sector, which capture and destroy methane from regional landfills. Even better for the environment, WGL Energy invests a portion of the proceeds into the Carbon Reduction Fund, managed by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and used to develop new projects, such as tree plantings, to improve air and water quality in the region and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

So what does it mean to offset the hotel stays of 28,000 people for four days? It’s the same as:

  • Taking 352 cars off the road for one year, or
  • Avoiding the consumption of over 187,000 gallons of gasoline, or
  • Planting over 43,000 tree seedlings that grow for 10 years.

Beyond the convention this week, WGL Energy is working in partnership with sporting events, concerts, corporations and communities to counterbalance energy usage, travel and other activities that produce greenhouse gas emissions. It’s these types of energy answers and options that will drive a more sustainable and resilient future.
