Government of Canada Delivers $109 Million to Alberta for Community Infrastructure Projects

First of two installments this year under federal Gas Tax Fund

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - July 29, 2016) - Infrastructure Canada

Modern and up-to-date community infrastructure helps ensure that Canadians live the quality of life that they want and expect. Community infrastructure helps connect people to jobs and provides access to better community services, attracts new businesses and creates economic growth opportunities.

This month, the Government of Canada delivered the first of two 2016-17 federal Gas Tax Fund (GTF) installments to Alberta. The $109.5 million installment, which flows through the provincial government to all of its communities on a per capita basis, is now available to support communities' local infrastructure projects. In total, the province will be provided over $219 million this year through the fund.

Across Alberta, communities rely on this federal funding to meet the needs of the middle class and those trying to join it, and to sustain the viability and quality of life in their community.

Based on planned projects for this year, GTF funding is expected to support over 250 local infrastructure projects of various sizes across 11 of the eligible funding categories. For example, the City of Red Deer has plans to replace 5 buses with new compressed natural gas buses and buy three new "Action buses", while the Village of Gadsby has plans to rebuild and pave 5th Street. From a $6 million renovation and expansion of the Guild performing arts centre in the Town of Hinton to funding the installation of two new fire hydrants in the Village of Hughenden, no other federal funding program provides communities with as much flexibility and decision making power.

The two Gas Tax Fund installments for this year are in addition to funds flowing to Alberta under other existing programs and the new funding available through two new federal funding programs - Public Transit Infrastructure Fund and Canadian Water and Wastewater Fund - which are included in Phase 1 of the 10-year, $120 billion Investing in Canada plan.

Quick Facts

  • Since the program was first introduced in 2005, over $1.8 billion has been provided to Alberta communities through the federal Gas Tax Fund.
  • The federal Gas Tax Fund makes over $2 billion available each year, and through it provides each community across Canada with a permanent, predictable and indexed source of long-term funding. The funding is made available in two installments each year, in July and November.
  • The federal Gas Tax Fund offers significant flexibility. Local communities can make strategic investments across 18 different project categories, including roads and bridges, public transit, drinking water and wastewater infrastructure, and recreational facilities. Communities can use the funds immediately for priority projects, bank the funds for later use, pool the dollars with other communities for shared infrastructure projects or use it to finance major infrastructure expenditures.
  • Phase 1 of Investing in Canada provides $11.9 billion in investments to support public transit systems, green infrastructure projects, and social infrastructure projects. Details on Phase 2 of Investing in Canada will be announced over the next year.

Quotes

"Through the federal Gas Tax Fund, communities across Alberta and the rest of Canada direct federal dollars towards their local infrastructure priorities, across a wide range of funding categories. The Government of Canada is proud to deliver this predictable, long-term funding to help ensure access to good jobs, increased mobility, greater economic opportunities, sustainable communities and a high quality of life for all Canadians."

The Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities

"The Alberta government is committed to ensuring municipalities have the support they need to build strong, dynamic communities for Alberta families. We are pleased to work with our federal partners to provide municipalities with stable, predictable funding for local infrastructure projects that create good jobs."
