Canada NewsWire

MUMBAI, India, Sept. 9, 2016 /CNW/ - Canada and India enjoy deep cultural, social and economic ties and are natural partners in the clean-growth economy. By working together on our shared priorities, we can meet our international obligations on climate change, enhance our energy security and ensure continued growth and prosperity for the middle class.

Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, the Honourable Jim Carr, led the Government's first official visit and trade mission to India this week. Minister Carr focused on reinvigorating our two countries' energy relationship and strengthening collaboration on clean energy and innovation.

Twenty representatives from Canada's oil and gas, renewables and electricity, and academic sectors joined the trade mission and were successful in creating new partnerships and new applications for renewable energy and clean technology, which will match Canada's expertise and resources with India's needs and expand India's interests in Canada.

Canada and India issued a joint statement highlighting important areas of cooperation, committing both countries to further action, including the development of a plan with real and measurable results that will be reviewed on an annual basis.

Minister Carr had productive meetings with his counterparts, including Renewables, Power, Coal and Mines Minister Piyush Goyal; Oil and Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan; Minister of State for Atomic Energy Jitendra Singh; and Steel Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh. The ministers underscored the importance of the Canada–India Energy Dialogue and discussed ongoing work in support of the objectives established under Mission Innovation. Canada and India are among the 21 Mission Innovation partners that have committed to doubling government investments in clean technology research and development and to stimulating private sector investment in clean technology over the next five years.

"Canada and India share a common vision of accelerating clean energy development to address climate change and energy security, while delivering jobs and investment. This visit has been about reaffirming the energy relationship between our two governments and continuing a journey we started when Canada and India joined with 19 other partners to launch Mission Innovation. And thanks to our strong trade delegation, we have deepened our business ties and established new partnerships to connect Canada's strengths with India's needs."
