KB Home applauded by EPA for its long-standing commitment to
energy-efficient and sustainable building practices
KB Home (NYSE: KBH) is pleased to announce that it reached the
significant milestone of constructing its 100,000th ENERGY STAR
certified home in 2016 and has received special recognition from the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for this pioneering
accomplishment. An ENERGY STAR program participant since 2000, KB Home
was the first homebuilder to commit to building only ENERGY STAR
certified homes.
“KB Home’s long-standing commitment to sustainability has been an
important part of our values, and we plan to continue our industry
leadership in this area,” said Jeffrey Mezger, KB Home chairman,
president, and chief executive officer. “We have found that what is good
for the environment and our customers is also good for our business.”
Collectively, these 100,000 ENERGY STAR-certified KB homes are estimated
to save homeowners as much as $30 million on utility bills annually,
while preventing greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from
36,000 passenger vehicles each year. Every ENERGY STAR-certified home
must meet EPA’s rigorous requirements for energy efficiency and undergo
third-party testing and verification.
New KB homes that earn the ENERGY STAR label are up to 70% more
efficient than typical existing homes today, meaningfully reducing
energy use and costs, as well as providing important environmental
benefits, over their life spans.
KB Home will be adding this distinction to an already impressive resume
of accolades from the EPA’s ENERGY STAR program. In 2016, the builder
received its sixth consecutive Sustained Excellence award, its third
Climate Communications award, and 17 ENERGY STAR Certified Homes Market
Leader awards.
“KB Home has been setting a shining example for other homebuilders since
your company first became an ENERGY STAR partner in 2000,” wrote Gina
McCarthy, Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in
a letter addressed to Jeffrey Mezger. “We value your partnership in
environmental protection, and all of us wish you continued success.”
