Level 1 PowerPost® EVSE Installation by Telefonix, Inc.® Featured in New U.S. Department of Energy Guide

WAUKEGAN, Ill., Sept. 8, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- In a new guide prepared by the U.S. Department of Energy Vehicle Technologies Office, entitled "Level 1 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations at the Workplace," Level 1 electric vehicle (EV) charging is identified as a good fit for commercial workplace charging needs. This finding supports the PowerPost team's belief that low-current charging at the workplace, the most common charging location outside the home, is an important part of the EVSE infrastructure future.

Authored by Margaret Smith of Energetics, this new report serves as a guide for employers considering the installation of electric vehicle charging for their employees. Outlined in the document are two methods in which Level 1 workplace charging can be delivered: by providing outlets for employees to plug in personal Level 1 cordsets, or by installing permanent wall or pedestal mounted EVSE units. The guide does call attention to the fact that safety standards for typical outlets were not developed with repeated operations for charging plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) with portable cordsets in mind.

Shortly after the introduction of the Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf, Telefonix realized the importance of low-current charging for workplaces for its own employees and recognized the issue with the use of personal cordsets in the commercial environment. Being a leading cord reel company, the team set out to adapt the company's cord reel technology for outdoor commercial EV charging. In 2013, Telefonix launched the L1 PowerPost® EVSE as the first commercial Level 1 charging station with a retractable cord reel and then followed up with the L2 PowerPost® EVSE; both products designed as low-current solutions for workplaces and longer dwell parking facilities where cars typically park for 2 hours or more.

Bill Williams, Business Development Manager at Telefonix, commented: "Other than charging at home, workplace charging is where the lion's share of charging occurs and therefore has a substantial impact on EV adoption. It is for this reason that the DOE guide is so exciting for us, as it supports our efforts to educate the public on the benefits of low-current charging for the workplace."

The report highlights successful Level 1 workplace EV charging examples, including Melink Corporation, a Milford, Ohio company that leveraged PowerPost™ EV charging stations for their workplace charging project. In December 2014, 14 PowerPost EVSE were installed to provide on-site charging for employees at the Net-Zero Energy and LEED Platinum building. As of April 2016, Melink reports 80% of the charging stations are occupied each day, and the company intends to install additional EVSE in the near future.

As referenced in the guide, more than 90% of commutes in the U.S. are under 35 miles, meaning Level 1 charging could adequately provide a commute recovery charge for the vast majority of people. With access to Level 1 charging at the workplace in addition to home charging, the charging needs of over 92% of U.S. drivers' workday travel could be met.

Telefonix is an environmentally conscious company and the ethos behind development of the PowerPost low-current EV charging product line was to make a simple, cost-effective and energy-conscious solution for commercial installation needs, a view parallel to the one included in the Department of Energy's newest report.
