New Report On Shale Oil And Gas Development In Texas Finds Wide Range Of Benefits And Consequences

AUSTIN, Texas, June 15, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- A new, comprehensive report on the impacts of shale oil and gas development in Texas by a diverse team of top researchers finds a wide range of both benefits and consequences for the state's environment and communities. The report, convened by The Academy of Medicine, Engineering and Science of Texas (TAMEST), collects the best science available and summarizes what we do and don't know about shale development impacts in Texas.

The TAMEST Shale Task Force report focuses on six key areas: seismicity, land, air, water, transportation, and economic and social impacts.

TAMEST is Texas' premier scientific organization, bringing together the state's best and brightest scientists and researchers. TAMEST membership includes all Texas-based members of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine and the state's Nobel Laureates.

"This is the first effort of its kind in Texas, bringing together the best experts from academia, environmental organizations, the oil and gas industry, and state agencies," says Task Force Chair Dr. Christine Ehlig-Economides. "All of us worked together to reach a scientific consensus on what we do and do not know about the impacts of shale oil and gas development."

The report will be released to the public on Monday, June 19th at 12:00 a.m. Central Time, and a webinar briefing will be held later that morning at 10:00 a.m. featuring key findings and recommendations from each impact area by the report's authors. Register here: http://tamest.org/shalewebinar.

Embargoed copies of the report will be available upon request beginning June 15, 2017.

Additional interview opportunities, images, video and other content are also available.

The TAMEST Shale Task Force report is a review of existing peer-reviewed scientific literature, following the same processes used by the National Academies to produce their reports. No funding was sought or accepted from oil and gas industry interests for this project.
