November set records for gas production, producing wells

The North Dakota Industrial Commission released its December 2016 Oil and Gas Production Report today, outlining hydrocarbon activity in the state for December 2016. Overall activity in December is down about 10% from levels seen in November.

  • The NDIC reports that oil production is down to 942 MSTB/d in December, from 1,034 MSTB/d in November. The vast majority of this production, 95%, is from the Bakken and Three Forks formations.
  • Gas production is also down at 1,538 MMCF/d, from a record 1,760 MMCF/d in November. 14% of produced gas was flared as a result of winter-related freezing problems.
  • The number of producing wells is down slightly at 13,337, with 13,520 in November setting an all-time high. 86% of these wells are unconventionals targeting the Bakken or Three Forks.
  • 38 rigs were active in January, compared to 37 in November and 40 in December. 98% of all drilling targets unconventional formations.
  • The number of well completions decreased slightly from 84 in November to 81 in December.
  • Estimated wells waiting on completion is 807, down 32 from the end of November to the end of December.
