WELLINGTON, ON, March 7, 2016 /CNW/ - Led by the Township of Wainfleet, 52 municipalities in Ontario now support a resolution calling on the Ontario government to halt plans to issue new contracts for wind power generation.

The Wainfleet Resolution cites the recent Auditor General's report, which states that Ontario's rising electricity bills are causing hardship for consumers and reducing business competitiveness, Ontario pays double what other jurisdictions pay for wind power, and the fact Ontario has a surplus of power while demand is falling.

The resolution also calls attention to the fact that wind power projects cause damage to the environment by killing wildlife.

Wind Concerns Ontario, the coalition of communities and individuals concerned about negative impacts from wind power developments, also supports the resolution.

"Wind power is produced out of phase with demand in Ontario," says Wind Concerns Ontario president Jane Wilson. "According to the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers, that can mean more greenhouse gas emissions, not less, because of the need for backup by natural gas power plants.

"Everyone wants to help the environment, but utility-scale wind power is not the answer," Wilson said.
