Philly Home Services Company Offers Advice for Beating the Heat Waves

Joseph Giannone Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning gives Philly homeowners tips and advice for efficiently and effectively cooling their homes this summer

PHILADELPHIA, July 23, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Joseph Giannone Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning, a family-owned home service company with an A+ rating by the BBB, is offering advice to Philly residents looking for effective and efficient ways to stay cool during the summer heat waves.

Philly home services company Joseph Giannone Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning is offering tips to local residents for staying cool during summer's hottest days and still saving on their energy bills.

"We've already had one intense heat wave this year, and many more hot summer days are expected ahead of us," said Joseph Giannone, owner of Joseph Giannone Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning. "When the temperature is hitting the nineties, fortunately there is more you can do than simply turn up the AC and rely on that alone."

Joseph Giannone Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning offers the following tips for saving energy while staying comfortable:

  1. Change the air filter – Cooling potential, energy efficiency and indoor air quality can all be negatively impacted by a filthy air conditioner filter. These should be routinely inspected and changed if needed every 30 days depending on usage, dust and pets.
  2. Check insulation around the home – The same insulation that keeps the home warm in winter serves to keep it cool during summer. Inspect all the doors in the home to make sure the weather stripping is still creating a seal, and adjust the thresholds if necessary to avoid a gap along the bottom of the door. Basements, crawlspaces and attics can all be sources of air leaks, so check them for gaps in insulation and add more as necessary. For windows with opening upper halves, make sure the top half is closed. This lets in humidity and can also pose a security risk.
  3. Use ceiling fans when possible – An overhead fan can actually make a room feel several degrees cooler, allowing the homeowner to increase the temperature on the thermostat and reduce AC run time. During the summer months, the fan should be set to run in a counterclockwise direction to push cooler air down and create a breeze effect.
  4. Utilize a smart or programmable thermostat – Smart and programmable thermostats allow homeowners to enjoy their preferred cooler temperatures while at home, but more importantly they can be set to reduce air conditioner run times during periods of vacancy. Set the thermostat higher for workdays and other periods of vacancy and lower for evenings and weekends. Homeowners can save a surprising amount on the energy bill by doing this while feeling no notable difference. On days when the temperature exceeds 90 degrees, set the thermostat at 75 or below. Heat and humidity can build up rapidly inside homes, and it is best not to stress the air conditioner as it cycles on.
  5. Be smart with sources of heat – Cooking on a stovetop frequently or for long amounts of time, burning multiple candles and leaving incandescent lights running can all add surprising amounts of heat to the home. Running multiple appliances simultaneously can also increase both heat and humidity. Choosing cooler foods for summer such as sandwiches and salads can still provide healthy options while reducing heat. Be sure to only light occupied rooms as needed, and consider choosing air fresheners over scented candles during the summer months as well.
