The world still runs on fossil fuels

Solar and wind continue to break installation records, battery storage is expanding rapidly, and governments are investing billions of dollars to accelerate decarbonization. Headlines often suggest the world is moving quickly beyond fossil fuels.

The data tell a more measured story.

Despite extraordinary growth in renewable energy, fossil fuels still generate roughly 60% of the world’s electricity, with coal remaining the single largest source of power generation, followed by natural gas. Hydroelectric power contributes about 14%, nuclear energy approximately 9%, while wind and solar together account for roughly 17% of global electricity generation. The balance varies by region, but the broader conclusion is clear: the modern economy still depends heavily on fossil fuels.

That reality is often overlooked in discussions about the energy transition.

Electricity demand is rising faster than many analysts expected. Artificial intelligence, hyperscale data centers, advanced manufacturing, electrification of transportation, and population growth are driving record increases in power consumption. The International Energy Agency expects global electricity demand to continue growing rapidly through the remainder of the decade, requiring enormous additions of generating capacity across every major region.

The question is not whether renewable energy will continue expanding. It almost certainly will.

The more important question is whether it can expand quickly enough to satisfy accelerating demand while replacing existing fossil-fuel generation.

Today, the answer is largely no.

Wind and solar have become increasingly competitive and now represent the lowest-cost source of new electricity in many markets. Yet they remain intermittent resources that require transmission upgrades, storage, dispatchable backup generation, and significant permitting and infrastructure investment before they can fully replace conventional power plants.

That is why natural gas continues to play an increasingly important role.

Modern combined-cycle natural gas plants can be built relatively quickly, operate with lower emissions than coal, and provide the flexible generation needed to balance intermittent renewable resources. In many countries, natural gas has become the bridge between today’s power system and tomorrow’s lower-carbon grid.

Coal tells a different story.

Although many developed economies continue retiring coal-fired generation, demand remains remarkably resilient across much of Asia. China and India continue to rely heavily on coal to support industrial growth, manufacturing, and rising electricity consumption. For many emerging economies, affordability and reliability remain higher priorities than rapid decarbonization.

Nuclear power is also receiving renewed attention.

Governments increasingly recognize that achieving lower emissions while maintaining reliable electricity supplies will likely require a combination of renewables, natural gas, hydroelectric power, and nuclear generation. Small modular reactors, life extensions for existing plants, and renewed investment in advanced nuclear technologies reflect a growing appreciation that firm, carbon-free generation will be needed alongside intermittent renewable resources.

For investors, the lesson is straightforward.

The energy transition is not replacing one system with another overnight. It is creating a larger and more diverse energy system in which multiple technologies compete and complement one another.

Electricity demand is growing so rapidly that new renewable capacity is often meeting incremental consumption rather than fully displacing fossil fuels. In many markets, coal plants remain in operation while natural gas generation expands to support reliability and renewable integration.

That dynamic creates opportunities across the energy value chain.

Natural gas producers benefit from rising power demand and the expansion of liquefied natural gas exports. Pipeline operators gain from increased gas transportation requirements. Utilities continue investing in transmission networks, substations, and grid modernization. Renewable developers benefit from supportive policies and declining technology costs. Nuclear companies are attracting renewed investor interest, while manufacturers of transformers, turbines, conductors, and grid equipment face growing demand.

The winners are unlikely to come from a single technology.

Instead, the greatest opportunities may lie in companies enabling the coexistence of multiple energy sources within an increasingly complex power system.

The debate over fossil fuels often becomes ideological. Markets, however, are generally more pragmatic.

Electricity must remain available every second of every day. Grid operators cannot rely on political aspirations or future technologies. They must balance supply and demand in real time using the generation resources available today.

For that reason, fossil fuels are likely to remain a cornerstone of global electricity generation for many years, even as renewable energy continues expanding at record pace.

The transition is real.

But so is the world’s continued dependence on coal and natural gas.

For investors, understanding both realities may prove more valuable than choosing one side of the debate.
