Toronto stock market has solid gain as American indexes fall; loonie up

TORONTO
— The Toronto Stock exchange was holding on to a solid gain this morning even as
U.S.
markets fell.

The S&P/TSX index was up 105.37 points or 0.8 per cent at 13,123.30 after nearly two hours of trading.

In

New York
, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 71.1 points at 16,828.20, while the broader S&P 500 declined 7.66 points to 1,978.79 and the Nasdaq lost 22.85 points to 4,680.57.

The Canadian dollar was trading at 74.67 cents US, up 0.19 of a

U.S.
cent from Wednesday's close.

In commodities, the April contract for benchmark

U.S.
crude oil was up 25 cents at US$$34.19 a barrel, while April natural gas was down 1.4 cents at US$1.79 per mmBtu.

April gold rose $14.70 to US$1,256.50 an ounce and May copper added two cents to US$2.20 a pound.
