June 21, 10 a.m. Press Club Headliners Newsmaker Features Former Sec. of Energy Ernest Moniz on Energy Security and Clean Energy Innovation and Announcement of the Energy Futures Initiative

WASHINGTON, June 13, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Trump administration's decision to pull out of the Paris Climate Agreement, its planned cuts to energy funding in the FY18 budget, and pursuit of deregulation has attracted significant criticism and called into question the reliability of the U.S. as an international partner. On June 21, at 10 a.m., in the National Press Club's Lisagor Room, Former Secretary of Energy Dr. Ernest Moniz will propose ways to maintain the American leadership edge on energy innovation. Moniz also is expected to announce the formation of a new non-profit organization "The Energy Futures Initiative," that aims to foster innovation in global energy systems.

According to the creators, EFI will be a non-partisan, think tank and advisory firm working across all energy sources to provide evidence-based analysis on decarbonizing energy systems, creating high-paying energy jobs, and finding ways to make energy infrastructure and supplies more secure.

Along with his chairmanship of the Nuclear Threat Initiative (which he takes over from former Senator Sam Nunn on June 1), Moniz plans to use EFI to mobilize stakeholders in government, industry, labor and NGOs in creating a clean energy future.

Moniz served as the U.S. Energy Secretary under President Obama from 2013-2017. He is a Ph.D. physicist with a long affiliation with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he is currently a part-time professor of physics post-tenure and special advisor to the president. Moniz has a significant experience forging international agreements, including the G-7 energy security principals, the 22-nation Mission Innovation clean-energy investment program, and had a lead role in the complex negotiations leading to the creation of the Iran nuclear deal.
