Total U.S. rig count 568: largely unchanged, but oil rigs increase again

The number of rigs actively drilling in the United States was down one this week, but the number of rigs targeting oil continues to climb. There are 452 rigs drilling for oil in the U.S. as of the week ended November 11, 2016, two more than last week, according to Baker Hughes Industries (ticker: BHI). These gains were offset by two fewer rigs targeting gas, and the loss of one “miscellaneous” rig, bringing their totals to 115 and 1, respectively. The total number of rigs operating in the U.S. was 568 at the end of the week.

Texas added six rigs to the state’s total count, and remains the most active state for drilling by far with 268 rigs. The closest second is Oklahoma with 75 rigs, one less than last week.

The Eagle Ford reported 3 more rigs this week compared to last, bringing its total to 38. The Permian remains the most active basin in the country with 218 rigs, but saw no changes from last week. The Utica reported one additional rig, while the Williston laid down two rigs, and the Cana Woodford and Marcellus each lost one rig.
