Permian completion almost doubles 2016 record Montney completion

Stage Completions USA is demonstrating how to maximize completions for operators in the Permian Basin.

Stage said that it achieved a record-setting 142-stage completion with its 5.5” Bowhead II Sliding Sleeve System at a Permian well.

The 142-stage frac was completed in 4.3 days. Here’s what the technology did:

  • 34 stages per day,
  • placed 9.2 million pounds (4,600 tons) of frac sand,
  • maximum concentration of 4 ppg (480 kg/m3),
  • maximum pump rate of 60 bbl/min (9.54 m3/min), and
  • average horsepower requirement of 4300 hp.

Stage’s Bowhead II sliding sleeve system uses a dissolvable ball, no wireline or coiled tubing

Stage’s Bowhead II system runs a dissolvable ball on collet that activates sliding sleeves. Stage said its system provides continuous pinpoint fracturing capability to operators without wireline or coiled tubing.

Stage said the Bowhead II has a constant ID through the wellbore that is cementable in place, allowing for:

  • longer laterals,
  • tighter spacing,
  • higher pump rates,
  • reduced HHP requirements,
  • optimized water volumes for completions, and
  • higher sand concentration.

“Operators have placed a high priority on completion efficiencies that directly impact estimated ultimate recovery and return on investment during a well’s life cycle,” said Sean Campbell, president of Stage Completions.

Interestingly, the Permian completion that set the record for Bowhead II with 142 frac stages almost doubled a Stage Completions 76-stage record without coil tubing that the company set in an Upper Montney well when the Bowhead technology was first rolled out in 2016. Stage Completions was founded in 2014. The company has offices in Denver, Houston, Calgary and China.
