U.S. Adds Six Oil-Targeting Rigs: Baker Hughes

Small activity shifts, overall count down one

Drilling activity decreased slightly this week, with only minor changes in most categories, according to Baker Hughes Weekly Rig Count.

The total number of rigs active in the U.S. dropped by one, falling to 946. Land and inland waters counts were unchanged, while one offshore rig came offline. There are now 929 land rigs, one inland waters and 16 offshore rigs operational in the U.S.

The only major change in the categories tracked by Baker came in targets, as six oil-targeting rigs began operations and seven gas-targeting rigs shut down. A total of 765 oil-targeting rigs and 181 gas-targeting rigs are currently drilling in the country, meaning oil targets now make up just under 81% of all operations.

Rig trajectories were virtually unchanged, with only one directional rig shutting down. Horizontal and vertical activity was steady this week, so there are now 72, 808 and 66 directional, horizontal and vertical rigs respectively.

The largest increase in activity among major states tracked by Baker was seen in Colorado, which added two rigsthis week. One came online in North Dakota and Ohio, while one came offline in Louisiana and Texas. The only major decrease was in Wyoming, where three rigs shut down.

Activity was also mostly constant in the major basins tracked by Baker, with only small changes reported. Two rigs came online in the Haynesville, and one became active in the DJ-Niobrara, Utica and Williston. One shut down in the Arkoma Woodford.

Canadian activity saw slightly more change this week, adding four rigs to end the week at 342. Like in the U.S., Canadian drilling shifted to oil targets this week, with 14 oil rigs coming online and 10 gas rigs shutting down.
